The idea came about when she was working on the Junior Board of the UNEP International Children’s Conference on the Environment held in Victoria, Canada in May 2002. The Junior Board were very concerned to make sure the conference had as little impact on the environment as possible. Sarah realised that the flights of all the delegates coming to Victoria from all over the world created a lot of greenhouse gases. The worldwide forest began when Sarah set up a pledge system so that delegates could promise to plant trees at home to make up for the CO2 emitted by their flights to Canada.

Sarah took this idea home and started a partnership with South Yorkshire Forest so that travellers from all over South Yorkshire/Britain/the World could have the opportunity to plant trees to offset the pollution caused by their travel. The launch of Cool Kids For A Cool Climate took place on 20th November 2002 at Greenland Nursery & Infants School, Sheffield, UK - in the pouring rain. Sarah was joined by Paul Hudson, the local BBC TV weather forecaster, and they challenged local journalists to think about how their travel affects climate change. On Wednesday 7th January 2004 I went to London's BBC Television Centre to appear on BBC Breakfast. I was interviewed by Dermot and Natasha about my predictions for the weather in 50 years time. | On 11th January 2004 Radio 4's 'Go 4 It' programme broadcast an interview with me at the planting of the Childnet trees. | ![]() |

In the summer of 2006 I was asked to be the environmental expert on the CBBC programme Level Up. The programme was shown on BBC2 and CBBC from 7.30 to 8.30 a.m in term time and 9.30 to 10.30 a.m. during the holidays. I made five short films on environmental issues: water shortages (interviewing Paul Hudson), Climate Change and schools, marine pollution, Breathing Spaces (creating areas for wildlife in school grounds) and Food Miles. I then had to introduce these films live in the studio and chat with Sam and Mark - all very early in the morning! This photo is of me in rehearsal in the studio with Sam and Mark. |
