Cool Kids For A Cool Climate

Cool Kids Tree Planting 2007

The autumn of 2006 was useless for tree planting. The leaves were not falling from the trees until too late.

Most of the Cool Kids trees were planted in the Spring of 2007 and luckily there has been a lot of rain this summer to help them get established. Here a details of a couple of the events:

We planted some trees at Meadow View Primary School in Rotherham in March 2007. This is a newly built school and the grounds were a bit bare and needed brightening up. To help with their healthy eating scheme at the school we planted a lot of different apple trees.

The apple varieties planted were: Discovery, Superb, Spartan, Katy, Charles Ross, Howgate Wonder (Cooking), Fiesta, Keswick Codlin, Egremont Russet and Ribston Pippin.

The school's Wildlife Watch group and Miss Hodkin and Mrs Livesey's class all took part in a day of tree planting.

Miss Hodkin is the Healthy Schools Coordinator and wants her pupils to learn all about the look and taste of different fruit and vegetables and to get a chance to grow their own at school.

We have got help and advice from Clifford Cain of the Northern Fruit Group who are running a Yorkshire Fruit into Yorkshire Schools scheme.

We also planted some trees whose fruit would just be for the local wildlife. We planted Rowan, Blackthorn, Guelder rose, Hazel, Dogwood and Field maple.

We also got together with a lot of friends to plant a small wood in memory of my Dad, Pete Bowler, who died in September 2005.

The trees were planted at Warren Vale, near Rawmarsh. This used to be a landfill site, but has now been capped off and the tree planting will help return it to being a green and beautiful area for the wildlife and walkers to enjoy. We planted Alder, Wild cherry, Hazel, Holly, Field maple, Dog rose, Rowan and Oak.

The oak trees are ones that I have grown in my garden from acorns gathered from near where I live.
