Cool Kids For A Cool Climate

Kingstone School Gets Cool Kids Trees

On Tuesday 2nd December the first of this year's trees were planted, in National Tree Week, at Kingstone School Barnsley.

With the money donated by Childnet, as a tax on the flights of Childnet Award winners to London, we were able to purchase 110 trees. Kingstone School had wanted trees planted to screen their view of (and noise from) the M1 motorway and to provide a wildlife habitat, it seemed a good thing that those trees would help clean up the pollution from the motorway.

South Yorkshire Forest did all the preparation on the site. The soil was very dry and hard despite the recent rain. They brought on a tractor to make holes for the tree planting. After 13 holes the machine broke! The other 97 holes had to be hacked out by hand with the help of some BTCV volunteers - Thanks!

Over 100 trees were planted in the school grounds by the Year 9 Wildlife Group and their teacher Mr Wragg. They planted oak, holly, rowan, alder and birch.

Thanks Childnet! Thanks South Yorkshire Forest! and Thanks Kingstone School - but missing French and Science had to be good!
